Friendly Reminders

  • Events must be two (2) minutes in length for high school; one and a half (1 1/2 or 1.5) minutes for middle school level. Events less that that will receive a NO RATING.
  • Judges score must be an original (see State MSBOA Handbook).
  • Label music with school name (so when your student loses the music, we will know where to send it)
  • Make sure the student has their copy and a judges copy.
  • All ensembles must have a full score (not individual parts). NO SCORE = NO RATING.
  • All parts must be played in an ensemble
  • If there is a piano accompaniment, it must be played.
  • Encourage your students to listen to other events.
  • All additions must go through the main office
  • Students should check with the warm-up person at least 1/2 hour before their scheduled performance time.
  • Percussionists must furnish all of their own equipment.
  • Students may participate in a maximum of three (3) events. Students are not allowed to perform two solos on the same instrument. This does not include the chamber ensembles or accompaniment).
  • Medals are included in the entry fee.
  • Piano duets must be for four hands and one piano.
  • Pianos are NOT provided in the warm-up rooms, except in piano sections.

  • Mixed instrument/ensemble books will be allowed to play for ratings at both JH and SH events
  • Compositions with three written parts but clearly stated playable as a duet with the melody as one of the performed lines will be allowed
  • Some of these arrangements have a piano accompaniment. In this case, the piano accompaniment MUST BE PLAYED regardless of instrumentation.
For SH events to qualify for State S&E these policies may not upheld at state events. Don’t assume the same policy. Check with site chairs.

Director Reminders

  • Directors must sign in upon arrival and bring your drop and add sheet to the main office. (Even better - email your drop and adds the day before!)
  • The workers meeting will be at 7:30 am.
  • All work assignments are full day work assignments.
  • All time change and type of event changes will be done in that section, not the main office. Any additions to an event (example: duet to trio) need to go through the main office.
